This vision came to me in a dream where I visited the Devi Koti Temple in District Chamba, Himachal Pradesh. The 18th century wooden shrine exemplifies the magnificent of the skill and talent of the craftsmen of the region. However, in contrast to its beauty it is largely unknown to most people.
This painting of Durga, draws from the epic battle portrayed on the wall murals of the temple. Particularly depicting the tale where Devi, after vanquishing Mahishasura is greeted by an assembly of gods, Vishnu, Shiva, Brahma, Indra and the sage Narada.
The border treatment echos wood carvings from the ceiling panels of the temple.
